Kampung Biawak, Lundu, Kuching

"Biawak" means Varanidae in english, a huge reptile in carnivorous lizard's family. There must be some reasons behind why the folks named their village as "Kampung Biawak" - Varanidae Vilage. Kampung Biawak is very close to the Sarawak-Kalimantan (Indonesia) border, approximately 20km driving from junction of Jalan Lundu Serayan.

Majority of the residents are Bidayuh which is the collective name for several indigenous groups found in southern Sarawak. There are generally said to be three main linguistic groupings (Biatah; Bau-Jagoi; Bukar-Sadong).

They traditionally involved themselves by rotational agriculture and hunting based around farms populated from the parent villages situated on the hills for protection. Today, almost all the traditional longhouse-villages have been replaced by individual houses, and some primary schools and Roman Catholic churches can be found along the rocky and gravel roads. By roads and there is some plantation agriculture (oil palm, paddy, fruit trees, especially durian) remain important property markers.

Traditional Atap House @ Sebuluh, Kuching

Mini makeshift hut, found along the way to Mark's fish feeding pond near Sebuluh, Kuching. This hut is made of atap and dried bamboo, owned by his friend named Su.

Usually, the local residents (Ibans) use the dried atap leaves (thatched leaves) to construct the entire roof. The proper thatching of the leaves to insulate a hut in both warm and cold weather, even does't leak during the rainy days. It is the oldest roofing material typically for tropical and temperate area.

Bees are flying insects which closely related to wasps. A female bee will build a nest cell with a secreted wax mixed with its own saliva, lays an egg, stores some foods and seals afterward, for growing of larva.

Flash Flood @ Sibu, City of Swan

A "flash" flood attacked Sibu again! Sibu is a town with area of 229.8 square kilometers located at the middle of east Malaysia. It is confluence with the Rejang and Igan Rivers, some 60 kilometers from the ocean. A flash flood is a rapid flooding process at low-lying areas eg: washes, rivers and streams. It is usually caused by heavy rain associated with a tropical storm, or thunderstorm.
